Flu vaccine information--where can my child obtain the flu vaccine?

Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Availability:  As of 3/22/2010, our practice has plenty of regular child/adult (age 6 months and above) seasonal injectable form and no seasonal flu vaccine available in preservative-free infant (6-35 months) injectable form.  We do not have any nasal FluMist at this time.  Those wishing to vaccinate their children can do so while in the office for a well visit or during our normal shot clinic hours. See hours of operation.

For most of the insurances we accept, the influenza vaccine is covered for all children.  Optimum Choice and MD IPA insurances will cover injected flu vaccine in children age 6-59 months; they also cover the injected flu vaccine in children 5 and older with asthma, neuromuscular disorders, and other risk factors for influenza infections, but for healthy children (without asthma or other risk factors) ages 5 and older they will only cover FluMist, not the injected flu vaccine.

H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccine Availability: We are happy to inform you that recent recalls of some 6-35 month H1N1 vaccine and the MedImmune nasal spray for healthy children age 2 and up, while true, are not from the same vaccine lots that Virginia Pediatric and Adolescent Center has received.  Rest assured that the vaccines that any 6-35 month olds received from us, as well as the nasal spray that children and adults age 2 and older received, are viable; these children and adults need not receive any additional doses of H1N1 vaccine beyond the recommended schedule.  As of 3/22/2010 our practice has H1N1 injectable flu vaccine for infants (age 6 months and up), children (6 months-21 years), and adults; we have this in both our Springfield and Fair Oaks locations.  We have no injectable preservative-free H1N1 flu vaccine for infants 6-35 months at this time, and we have no nasal H1N1 FluMist (for those 24+ months of age) in either office.  We apologize for any inconvenience to you and your children due to the delays and types of H1N1 vaccine we have available.  Our vaccine availability is determined by what the health department sends us.  Those who wish to have their children vaccinated with the H1N1 vaccine can do so either while in the office for a well visit (not walk-in sick clinic) or during our normal shot clinic hours. See hours of operation.

It is recommended that children age 9 and under receive two separate doses of H1N1 vaccine (at least 21 days apart if both doses are injected, at least 28 days apart if one or both doses are nasal) for full immune protection.  If your child received the first dose elsewhere, please bring documentation of the date of that vaccine administration when your child comes to our office to receive the second dose.

We will continue to update our website as vaccine availability changes.
